Research Paper
Objective
Write a 8~10 page research paper on one or more socially engaged software.
Description
For your last assignment, you will dive into a deep research on one or more socially engaged software. As a starting point, identify a broad and reoccuring theme within the software discourse (see possible themes below). Consider how commerical and preditorial software exerts dominance and erasure, as well as how the socially engaged software of your choice resists such control. Formulate a 8~10 page paper in your own words (12pt; 1.5 line; 2" margins; visuals & bibliography excluded).
Elements to include in your paper:
Title
- Who are your readers? Consider how your title draw them in.
Themes
- What are the central themes in your paper? Why are you researching them?
Thesis Question
- Narrow down your inquiry. What is the main question you're hoping to answer through this paper?
Arguments and Evidence
- Branching off from your thesis question, come up with a list of arguments
- Backing up your arguments with evidence. Make sure that you're citing reliable sources
Bibliography
- Citations in MLA style

You will be giving a 2-minute presentation on your research direction on 4/1. Your presentation material can be a slideshow or a word doc, but please make sure the following elements are included:

- Which socially engaged software are you going to focus on in your essay?
Theme(s)
- Name 1~3 theme(s) you are focusing on in your essay.
Thesis Questions
- Write down a list of possible thesis questions that will guide your essay. Over the next few weeks you will be narrowing down & refining your question as you learn more about the topic, so don't worry about having to finalize this just yet.
Reading List
- Compile a list of 10~15 books, essays, articles, podcasts, videos, etc you're studying for the paper.
Project Deadlines
- 4/1: research paper proposal presentation.
- 5/1: please submit your paper in PDF form to Canvas Assignment 3.
